Happy Women’s History Month! Let us honor our Black foremothers who forged the path we struggle on today, and who provide us with the wisdom of a revolutionary lifestyle. Let us uplift the Black women who continue to organize with deep love and compassion for our people today. May we continue to be inspired by their spirits, and be compelled to push forward in the work we do, not just during Women’s History Month but every day, and make the world a better place for Black people to live beautiful and healthy lives.
Read MorePolice associations have long declared war on the people…with targets on the backs of Black people, in particular. Their members routinely perpetrate acts of state violence while pilfering massive amounts of money from the public purse, entrenching policies that give police extra rights (instead of extra accountability), bullying and bribing elected officials, protecting even the most violent and corrupt among them, and criminalizing and attacking those who fight back. Police associations function as organized crime. Their interests are fundamentally opposed to those of every other working-class person. They are not unions. They are not labor. It’s time that their reign of terror be brought to an end.
Black Lives Matter and allies continue to organize for progressive justice reform and are encouraged by the current District Attorney’s strong stance. Yesterday, the judge who heard the lawsuit filed by the Association for Deputy District Attorneys Association and supported by police associations sided with them and against us. They ruled that DA Gascon could not refuse to implement California’s Three Strikes. This is by no means over! We are ready for a long court battle, and are committed to a multi-pronged strategy.
Read MoreBlack Lives Matter was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize! While we don’t do this work for recognition, it is a tremendous honor to be considered for, what many consider, the highest award in the change-making sphere. We also know that it is impossible to fully acknowledge the millions of people around the world who have built this movement, the sacrifices made, the legacy which enables our rise, the Spirits on whose behalf we struggle, and the energy generated. Thank you to all who #DoTheWork to build and sustain our incredible movement.
Read MoreWe finally have a new Administration! The white-supremacist-in-chief is gone from the White House and Biden-Harris are in! We must claim our victory. It was the work and power of Black organizing that got Donald Trump out! AND…we must remain vigilant. Violent white supremacy did not start or end with Trump. Let’s do all we can to develop community-driven safety plans. We must also do all we can to push the new Administration to advance our interests. Support Black Lives Matter demands!
Read MoreWe are all breathing a collective sigh of relief with the most repressive, racist, sexist, corrupt, dangerous regime of our lifetime out of the White House. We also know that white supremacy has not vanished, police violence remains. We are still in the midst of the worst health pandemic in history, crime is soaring because funds are not being invested in the things our people need to survive and be healthy. This beautiful struggle is far from over. May the release of the albatross around our collective necks lighten our load so that we might struggle more intently from a place of vision and coming victory.
Violent white-supremacy is the greatest threat to Black life and the nation. The domestic terrorists who attempted to stage a coup at the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday are also erupting all over the country, including right here in Los Angeles, with police aiding and abetting. At least two Black people were attacked in separate incidents downtown over the last several days. Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles is strongly encouraging everyone to develop community safety plans.
Read MoreHappy New Year! 2020 was undeniably a year of great challenge…and it was also a year that proved “when we fight, we win.” In 2021, we are committed to unseating those who do not serve the people, toppling oppressive systems, and building new structures that bring justice, peace, and freedom.
Read MoreOn November 23, 2020, Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles convened a community forum to receive recommendations and comments on what expectations Los Angeles County residents have for the newly elected District Attorney. A multi-platform synchronous meeting was held, with an in-person engagement of key constituents, additional stakeholder participation through zoom, and public participation through Facebook Live. There were more than 400 total real-time participants, with more than 2000 people viewing after-the-fact. Both the priority commitments offered by DA-elect Gascon and the expectations derived from the community meeting are included below.
Read MoreIt’s been 20 DAYS since we initiated our effort to #BlockGarcetti from President-elect Biden’s cabinet, and SO-FAR-SO-GOOD. Someone else has been named HUD Secretary (a position for which it was rumored he was being considered) and as names for cabinet posts come in, Mayor Garcetti’s has not been among them. We know that this is due to constant pressure. We will continue to push until Joe Biden confirms that Garcetti won’t be appointed or the mayor says he’ll reject any cabinet appointment. Let’s plan for a win TONIGHT AT 7PM during our General Meeting…this month on Facebook Live.
Read MoreOn Sunday December 6th, 2020, we were reminded how absolutely brutal LAPD is. As BLMLA and allies gathered with our children, elders, and community to pray, pour libation, chant, and have a solidarity brunch to #BlockGarcetti from a Biden-Harris Cabinet posisition, police rushed in to violently attack us. These tactics are attempts to silence us. What it really does is further expose Mayor Garcetti as a liberal-white-supremacist and purveyor of state violence. This only strengthens our resolve to fight harder. JOIN US EVERY MORNING AT 9AM AT 6TH & IRVING TO #BLOCKGARCETTI!
Read MoreWe are also in the midst of #BlockGarcetti – trying to ensure that the “worst mayor in the nation,” isn’t appointed to Biden’s Cabinet. JOIN US EVERY MORNING AT 9AM AT 6TH & IRVING TO BLOCK GARCETTI!

Read More#BlackXmas is going global! Black Lives Matter chapters around the world are leading the charge to withhold our dollars from white capitalism and invest them in Black community: #BuildBlack, #BuyBlack, #BankBlack from 11/27/2020-1/1/2021. We must remember that white capitalism uses violent policing to entrench and maintain its power. Walmart is complicit in the murder of #JohnCrawford and #StevenTaylor, Walgreen’s in the murder of #SkyYoung, Home Depot in the murder of #YuvetteHenderson, the Crenshaw Mall in the murder of #GrecharioMack, and so many others. During this time of year, let’s be especially intentional about spending our resources in ways that build our community, not the white capitalist police state…and it can be FUN!
Read MoreWe won!!!! Black people defeated Donald Trump! We have already written to the Biden-Harris administration requesting to meet with them about our expectations and priorities. And…after more than three years of weekly protest, endless phone calls, emails, petitions, letters, pop-ups, and even having our lives threatened, District Attorney Jackie Lacey is OUT! More than that, we PASSED MEASURE J, which guarantees a baseline of funding for the resources that actually make Angelenos safe, like housing, healthcare, and good jobs. This election has been a testament to community power and what happens when we VOTE & ORGANIZE!
Read MoreIt’s almost here! On November 3rd we have a chance to VOTE OUT those in office who don’t serve the people and VOTE IN more authentic leaders and meaningful policies. We need everyone to get to the polls on or before Election Day! And on November 4th…and every day after…let’s stay in the work of holding politicians accountable, developing and implementing meaningful policies, and building strong communities – which are foundational for a peaceful, safe, and nurturing world. VOTE AND ORGANIZE!
Read MoreWe’re just 10 days out from Election Day! Nationally, we have launched a Black voter engagement campaign. And, there is so much at stake locally…from an opportunity to move towards racial equity in California by voting#YesOn16, to #YesOnJ for more County resources to housing, healthcare, and good jobs (not jails and sheriffs), to shifting #JackieLaceyMustGo from a chant to reality. Let’s fight as hard as we can to win as much as we can on November 3rd. Please join as many actions as you are able this week. VOTE AND ORGANIZE!
Read MoreOur motto in this moment is VOTE AND ORGANIZE! We are mobilizing to the polls! We’re encouraging everyone to vote, develop a voting plan, and to vote all the way down the ballot. Please consult (and share) our official voter guide on ballot measures and propositions. And, of course, as we chant #JackieLaceyMustGo, we have an opportunity to make it happen this election.
Read MoreThe November election is just weeks away! There is so much at stake. As we focus intently on the Presidential elections, we must not lose sight of what is moving down-ballot. For three years now, BLMLA has stood with the families of those killed by police and chanted #JackieLaceyMustGo. Now we have an opportunity to vote the most corrupt, problematic District Attorney in the nation out of office. There are important ballot propositions and measures as well…For the first time ever, BLMLA is releasing a propositions and measures voter guide, which will be posted on our website and social media pages.
Read MoreWe’re exactly 4 weeks out from Election Day! Vote-by-mail ballots were sent out over the weekend and drop-off locations are now open. While we know that voting is but one tool in our toolbox, it’s one that we must utilize if we are to honor the spirits of Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer, Medgar Evers, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., (Fundi) Ella Baker, and so many others.
