BLMLA Weekly Email 9/30-10/07/2024

BLMLA Actions/Events (9/30/2024 – 10/07/2024):

  • TUESDAY, 10/01/2024 at 9:30AM - Los Angeles Police Commission Meeting at LAPD HQ 100 W. 1st St. -  Join the LAPC Fails Coalition, including Black Lives Matter-LA, Stop LAPD Spying, White People 4 Black Lives, LA CAN, and allies, as we show up and call out the LA Police Commission for refusing to hold killer cops accountable after they steal our loved ones and take much-needed resources away from our community. Join us in the struggle by making your voice heard during public comment. DEFUND THE POLICE!

  • Wednesday, 9/02/2024 at 4PM - New Face Same System #EndPoliceAssociations Rally at 1313 W. 8th Street -  Join families of those killed by police, organizers and allies, and community partners for this week’s #EndPoliceAssociations rally where we will make clear that the soon-to-be-named new LAPD police chief is simply a fresh face representing the same system. Police are tools of the oppressor, meant to threaten and exact violence on the workers of the world. Bring your voice, your energy, and a few friends as we chant down the Los Angeles Police Protective League.

  • Thursday, 10/03/2024 at 9:30AM-5PM - Criminal Courts Building, 210 West Temple St, 9th Floor, Department 104 -  This week and next, we stand in solidarity with the family of #SkyYoung, a young Black man killed by Donald Vincent Ciota, a Walgreens security guard. Ciota is now facing charges for the 2018 murder. Since Sky’s murder, we have been by the family’s side and will continue to do so as they fight for justice. Please join us in providing court support for the family as they navigate this difficult time. Court proceedings are expected to continue through the week of the 14th.

More to come!

Recap:

  • Last Tuesday, BLMLA and the LAPC Fails Coalition, including Stop LAPD Spying, White People 4 Black Lives, and LA CAN, took action against the Los Angeles Police Commission at LAPD HQ. Together, we demanded accountability for killer cops and advocated for reallocating resources back into the community.

  • Last Wednesday, families of those killed by police, BLM organizers, and allies gathered for the #EndPoliceAssociations rally. We stood in solidarity to demand an end to police associations like the Los Angeles Police Protective League, raising our voices against their role in enabling state violence.

  • Also on Wednesday, a 14th Council District Candidate Debate took place at the Presbyterian Church, where we showed up in force to oppose racist, disgraced City Councilman Kevin De Leon. De Leon’s anti-Black racist remarks will not be forgotten, and we made sure he heard our voices.

  • Last Thursday, Yazmin Monet Watkins celebrated the release of her first book of poetry, A Vessel Born to Float, at the Center for Black Power. The evening featured powerful poems and conversations about the past, present, and future of the Black freedom struggle. You can pick up your copy from any Black bookstore, including Reparations Book Club on Adams.

  • Last Saturday, This Is Not a Drill! aired on KBLA 1580 AM. Hosted by Baba Akili and Kimberlee Holmes, the episode focused on the crises in Haiti, featuring guests Dr. Ron Daniels, Ruth Jeannoel, our own Pastor Cue jnMarie, and Guerline Jozef. The discussion highlighted the situation in Haiti and included the sister of #AlbertRamonDorsey. Missed it? Watch here or listen to BLM’s This Is Not a Drill! wherever you get your podcasts.
