BLMLA Weekly Email 9/23-9/30/2024
BLMLA Actions/Events (9/23/2024 – 9/30/2024):
TUESDAY, 9/24/2024 at 9:30AM - Los Angeles Police Commission Meeting at LAPD HQ 100 W. 1st St. - Join the LAPC Fails Coalition, including Black Lives Matter-LA, Stop LAPD Spying, White People 4 Black Lives, LA CAN, and allies, as we show up and call out the LA Police Commission for refusing to hold killer cops accountable after they steal our loved ones and take much-needed resources away from our community. Join us in the struggle by making your voice heard during public comment. DEFUND THE POLICE!
Wednesday, 9/25/2024 4PM - #EndPoliceAssociations Rally at 1313 W. 8th Street - Join families of those killed by police, BLM organizers and allies, and community partners for this weeks #EndPoliceAssociations rally. Police are tools of the oppressor, meant to threaten and exact violence on the workers of the world. Bring your voice, your energy, and a few friends as we chant down the Los Angeles Police Protective League.
Wednesday, 9/25/2024 6PM - 14th Council District Candidate Debate at Presbyterian Church, 2241 N. Eastern Ave. - It’s appalling that anti-Black racist, disgraced City Councilman Kevin De Leon is running for reelection. In 2022, De Leon was caught on tape saying that Black people have no power and in reality there are only “25 Black people yelling.” Let’s show him what 25 Black people (and our allies) yelling sounds like! We will not give him a pass.
Thursday, 9/26, 2024 7PM - Book Event for Yazmin Monet Watkins at the Center for Black Power, 3423 W. 43rd Place - Our very own Yazmin Monet Watkins has published her first book of poetry! A Vessel Born to Float is a beautiful and powerful collection that gives life to this freedom struggle and validates why Yazmin is our movement’s pet laureate. Join for good music and even better conversation, plus a poem or two.
Saturday, 9/28/2024 8-10AM - This Is Not a Drill! on KBLA 1580 AM - Tune in to This Is Not a Drill! every Saturday from 8-10AM on KBLA Talk 1580 AM or facebook.com/BLMLA. Recap:
Last Tuesday, BLMLA and the LAPC Fails Coalition, including Stop LAPD Spying, White People 4 Black Lives, and LA CAN, took action against the Los Angeles Police Commission at LAPD HQ. Together, we demanded accountability for killer cops and advocated for reallocating resources back into the community.
Last week, BLMLA provided court support for the family of #AlbertRamonDorsey. Ramon was murdered by LAPD officers standing naked in the locker room after showering at 24-Hour Fitness in Hollywood. BLMLA spent two years protesting in his name to #Boycott24. Ramon’s family is now suing the LAPD for his coldblooded murder.
Last Wednesday, families of those killed by police, BLM organizers, and allies rallied at 1313 W. 8th Street for a special edition of #EndPoliceAssociations to demand comprehensive reparations and an end to police associations. We united to call out the violent role of police in oppressing workers and communities.
Last week, This Is Not a Drill! on KBLA 1580 AM, was hosted by Baba Akili and co-hosted by Sheila Bates and focused on Reparations Legislation in California. Special guests included Billion Godsun and Jan Williams. More than a hashtag with the family of Eric Holmes. Missed it? Catch the conversation wherever you get your podcasts. Missed it?
