Weekly Email 5/31/2021-6/7/2021

This Week’s BLMLA Actions/Events (5/31/2021-6/7/2021):

  • MONDAY, 5/31/2021 at 12PM – Downtown Crenshaw Protest at Beverly Santa Monica Blvds – Although Deutsche Bank and the public pension funds refuse to accept Downtown Crenshaw’s bid on the Crenshaw Mall and surrounding properties, they accepted the offer of a racist gentrifier named David Schwartzman at Harridge Development. This is a clear attempt to destroy the Black community and displace hundreds of Black residents. Join Downtown Crenshaw on the centennial of the Tulsa Massacre and demand that Deutsche Bank accept Downtown Crenshaw’s offer and sell the mall to the community, for the community!

  • WEDNESDAY, 6/2/2021 at 3PM (and every Wednesday) – Fund Services, Not Police! #EndPoliceAssociations SPECIAL STUDENT EDITION at 1313 W. 8th St., Los Angeles – As the Black Lives Matter-LA outdoor art exhibit New Black City comes to a close this Sunday, this Wednesday’s #EndPOliceAssociations action will focus on the theme for the exhibit – A World Without Police. As always, we’ll center families whose loved ones were stolen by police violence. Wear masks and bring your bodies, spirits, energy, drums, signs, flags and dedication.

  • THURSDAY, 6/3/2021 at 5PM – Students Deserve Press Conference at 333. S. Beaudry Ave – Students, educators, parents, organizers and community members will all come together to demand LAUSD fully defund the LA school police department and invest in the Black Student Achievement Plan!

  • THURSDAY, 6/3/2021 at 7PM – This Is Not a Drill! “Echo Park Lake, Leimert Park and the Right to Public Space” facebook.com/blmla – We’ll check in with Echo Park Lake activist Davon Brown, Africa Town leader Billion Godsun and others on our right to public space. Hosted by our own Melina Abdullah.

  • SUNDAY, 6/6/2021 at 12PM – Closing Ceremony BLMLA x Museum of Social Justice Exhibit “New Black City: A World Without Police” 115 Paseo De La Plaza (across from Union Station) – What a tremendous run! Over the last four weeks, New Black City has stood as a living exhibit at the Museum of Social Justice, radically imagining a world without police. To close the exhibit will be a day of music, spoken word, dance, art, and food. Bring friends and family and liberatory energy. Everything is free!

Ongoing

  • EVERYDAY - Call City Councilman Paul Krekorian at 818-755-7676 – There is no City Council Budget & Finance Committee meeting this week, but we must continue demanding Paul Krekorian “calendar the Mike Bonin motion” to reallocate City funds away from hiring 250 more LAPD officers in order to fund needed community resources.

  • FINAL WEEK! EVERYDAY, 10AM-5PM – BLMLA x Museum of Social Justice Exhibit “New Black City: A World Without Police” 115 Paseo De La Plaza (across from Union Station) – Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles and the Museum of Social Justice are proud to take you on a journey through the history of BLMLA (the first of Black Lives Matter chapters). The exhibit radically imagines a world without police and encourages us to dream of a better world where we invest in the people and not into a system that destroys Black communities. Live performances every weekend. If you’d like to volunteer to be a docent please sign up at this link. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4baea929a4f8c61-newblack
