This Week’s BLMLA Actions/Events (4/26/2021-5/3/2021):
MONDAY, 4/26/21 at 5:30pm – South LA Virtual Community Budget Hearing on Zoom, register at bit.ly/21budgetla – City Councilmembers Mark Ridley-Thomas, Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Curren Price Jr., Nury Martinez, and Paul Krekorian are hosting a community hearing session to discuss the Los Angeles budget proposal for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Our #PeoplesBudgetLA coalition will present a preliminary report on the people’s budget priorities. Make public comment and join us in demanding City Council #DefundThePolice and invest in our communities!
TUESDAY, 4/27/2021 at 9:30am – Los Angeles Police Commission Meeting on Zoom at https://lapd.zoom.us/s/289225944 – This week the Commission will be discussing LAPD’s Implementation Plan stemming from the independent reports that detail their abuses of protestors. Rather than defunding the police and firing Chief Moore, their proposed reforms will require $67 million in new spending for training, technology, surveillance and more police officers. Make public comment and let the commissioners know that we said #DefundThePolice and #FireChiefMoore! Demand that they reject the plan. Coalition talking points here. Please use the “raise hand” function to speak. To participate by phone, call (855) 880-1246, Meeting ID: 289 225 944. Press *9 to be put in the cue for public comment.
TUESDAY, 4/27/21 at 7PM – Torrance City Council Meeting for #ChristopherDeAndreMitchell at TorranceCA.gov and facebook.com/TorranceCA/ - To make a public comment during the meeting, call 310-618-2404 or you can email your comment in by 3pm to CouncilMeetingPublicComment@TorranceCA.gov. Please make comments demanding justice for #ChristopherDeandreMitchell, who was killed on December 9, 2018 by Torrance police officers Anthony Chavez and Matthew Concannon. The officers still haven’t been fired or prosecuted and Torrance still has no civilian review board to hold police accountable.
WEDNESDAY, 4/28/21 at 3PM (and every Wednesday) – Fund Services, Not Police! #EndPoliceAssociations at 1313 W. 8th St., Los Angeles – This Wednesday, we’ll honor the significance of May Day and demand police associations be removed from the House of Labor. We’ll be joined by delegates from REAL labor unions, like the California Faculty Association, United Teachers of Los Angeles, United Farmworkers, SEIU USWW and more. As always, we’ll center the impacted families who continue to fight for justice on behalf of their loved ones because police associations protect killer cops. Whether you’re in a union or not, stand in solidarity this Wednesday and every Wednesday at 3pm 1313 W. 8th St. across from the Los Angeles Police Protective League. Wear masks and bring your bodies, spirits, energy, drums, signs, flags and dedication.
THURSDAY, 4/29/2021 at 7PM – This Is Not a Drill! “The Power of Black Labor” facebook.com/blmla – Featuring a conversation with Black labor leaders. Hosted by our own Baba Akili.
