TUESDAY, 5/4/21 at 7PM – Torrance City Council Meeting for #ChristopherDeAndreMitchell at TorranceCA.gov and facebook.com/TorranceCA/ - We must continue to demand justice for #ChristopherDeandreMitchell, who was killed on December 9, 2018 by Torrance police officers Anthony Chavez and Matthew Concannon. The officers still haven’t been fired or prosecuted and Torrance still has no civilian review board to hold police accountable. To make a public comment during the meeting, call 310-618-2404 or you can email your comment in by 3pm to CouncilMeetingPublicComment@TorranceCA.gov.
WEDNESDAY, 5/5/21 at 3PM (and every Wednesday) – Fund Services, Not Police! #EndPoliceAssociations at 1313 W. 8th St., Los Angeles – This Wednesday, come out and demand that police associations stop “pilfering the public purse.” The Los Angeles Police Protective League has bullied and bribed its way to ensuring that LAPD gets more than 53% of the City’s general fund. We must #DefundThePolice and ending police associations is vital in this struggle. As always, we’ll center families of those who have been stolen by police violence. Wear masks and bring your bodies, spirits, energy, drums, signs, flags and dedication.
THURSDAY, 5/6/21 at 9AM – City Council Budget Hearing, by phone – This Thursday is your final opportunity to tell City Council to “fund services, not police.” Demand that they reject Mayor Garcetti’s proposed LAPD budget increase and actually #ReimaginePublicSafety by supporting a #PeoplesBudget! THURSDAY, 5/6/2021 at 7PM – This Is Not a Drill! “The People’s Budget” facebook.com/blmla – Our People’s Budget LA coalition will virtually present the 2021-2022 People’s Budget to LA City Councilmembers and the people. Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson have confirmed their attendance and all members have been invited, with several others expected to join. The presentation will outline the People’s priorities expressed during our three community town halls and findings from the 2021 People’s Budget LA survey, and will advocate for a budget that reflects how Angelenos want our tax dollars invested. So far, thousands have weighed in and said that they want funds for housing, education, mental health services, and good jobs, NOT more police. There’s still time to weigh in!
