Weekly Email 4/19/2021-4/26/2021

This Week’s BLMLA Actions/Events (4/19/2021-4/26/2021):

  • TUESDAY, 4/20/2021 at 9:30am – Los Angeles Police Commission Meeting on Zoom at https://lapd.zoom.us/s/289225944  – This week the Commission will be discussing police reform. Let’s push back against their call for more money for LAPD under the guise of “training.” Make public comment and let the commissioners know that we want to #DefundThePolice! Let’s also continue to demand the Police Commission to #FireChiefMoore! Coalition talking points here. Please use the “raise hand” function to speak. To participate by phone, call (855) 880-1246, Meeting ID: 289 225 944. Press *9 to be put in the cue for public comment.

  • TUESDAY, 4/20/2021 at 10:00am – Progressive Justice Reform Rally at Hall of Justice 211 W. Temple St. – Tuesday is Crime Victims Awareness Day. Sheriff Alex Villanueva is continuing his effort to exploit the pain of crime survivors, by hosting a rally for them at the Hall of Justice. BLMLA is partnering with crime survivors, NOT the sheriff to uplift what really prevents crime with our own “Progressive Justice Reform” rally.

  • TUESDAY, 4/20/21 at 7PM – Torrance City Council Meeting for #ChristopherDeAndreMitchell at TorranceCA.gov and facebook.com/TorranceCA/ - To make a public comment during the meeting, call 310-618-2404 or you can email your comment in by 3pm to CouncilMeetingPublicComment@TorranceCA.gov. Please make comments demanding justice for #ChristopherDeandreMitchell, who was killed on December 9, 2018 by Torrance police officers Anthony Chavez and Matthew Concannon. The officers still haven’t been fired or prosecuted and Torrance still has no civilian review board to hold police accountable.

  • WEDNESDAY, 4/21/21 at 3PM (and every Wednesday) – Fund Services, Not Police! #EndPoliceAssociations at 1313 W. 8th St., Los Angeles – On the eve of #DanielHernandez’ angel-versary, we’ll be standing with his family and honoring his life. Daniel was murdered by LAPD officer Toni McBride, daughter of Jamie McBride who heads the Los Angeles Police Protective League. Also staying ready for a ruling in the Chauvin trial...Ready to move in the name of #GeorgeFloyd. Wear masks and bring your bodies, spirits, energy, drums, signs, flags and dedication.

  • WEDNESDAY, 4/21/21 at 7PM – People’s Budget LA Community Town Hall on facebook.com/BLMLA – The Mayor presents his budget proposal Tuesday, April 20 with no input from the people, but plenty from LAPD. Let’s meet for the final People’s Budget LA community townhall for the 2021 budget season to compare the Mayor’s proposal with the People’s Priorities. And FILL OUT THE SURVEY! Make your voice heard and the results will be formally presented to city council.

  • THURSDAY, 4/22/2021 at 7PM – This Is Not a Drill! “In the Name of #GeorgeFloyd” facebook.com/blmla – We’ll be talking about the Chauvin Trial and what the case and verdict means and requires. Confirmed guest: Nekima Levy Armstrong, attorney and organizer from Minneapolis. Additional guests to be announced. Hosted by our own Melina Abdullah.

  • FRIDAY, 4/23/2021 at 5:30PM – People’s Budget LA City Council Presentation on facebook.com/BLMLA – Our People’s Budget LA Coalition will present to Los Angeles City Council, summarizing the priorities that Angelenos have shared during our community town halls and preliminary survey results. The presentation is meant to influence revisions to the mayor’s budget proposal and call on City Council to incorporate the people’s budget.

  • SUNDAY, 4/25/2021 3PM - In the Name of #GeorgeFloyd at Pan Pacific Park, 7600 Beverly Blvd. – Join Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles and BLD PWR for a march and rally in the name of #GeorgeFloyd no matter the verdict in the Chauvin Trial. We demand justice! That means an end to the murders of our people at the hands of police. Wear masks! Bring your signs, noisemakers, friends, spirits, and energy!
