TUESDAY, 8/30/2024 at 9:30AM – Los Angeles Police Commission Meeting at LAPD HQ 100 W. 1st St. -  LAPD killed a Black man on Sunday, who was accused of participating in a home burglary and having a “face off” with police, possibly holding a knife (not a gun). This marks the 9th murder and 19th shooting by LAPD so far this year. Join the LAPC Fails Coalition, including Black Lives Matter-LA, Stop LAPD Spying, White People 4 Black Lives, LA-CAN, and allies, as we hold the LA Police Commission accountable for their inaction. Recap:

  • Last Tuesday, BLM Grassroots supported the Freedom Campus demands issued by Dr.Melina Abdullah after she was brutally assaulted by campus police in 2022. The university rejected every single point in the offer, including requiring permission or a warrant for campus police to enter faculty offices, making campus events accessible to the university community, and divesting from weapons manufacturers. Administrators leveraged another legal action, threatening Dr. Abdullah with personal financial liability to force her to drop her suit against them.

  • Last Wednesday, the #EndPoliceAssociations rally continued, this time in honor of #SonyaMassey, a Black mother who was killed in her home by sheriffs in Springfield, Illinois. Her killer is protected by a police association linked to the Los Angeles Police Protective League. Rally participants gathered to stand against police violence and demand the dissolution of police associations. The rally took place at 1313 W. 8th Street.

  • Last Saturday’s edition of This Is Not a Drill! focused on the countywide effort to reallocate funds from jails and sheriffs toward systems of care through Reimagine LA, led by Megan Castillo. The #MoreThanAHashtag conversation featured the family of #FrankTyson, who was murdered by police in Ohio while repeatedly gasping the words “I can’t breathe” as he was choked to death. Missed it? Watch here or listen to BLM’s This Is Not a Drill! wherever you get your podcasts.

  • Last Sunday, BLMLA participated in a rally for #YongYang at Liberty Park. Yong Yang, a 40-year-old K-Town resident, was shot and killed by LAPD in his family home during a mental health crisis. The rally called for justice, accountability, and systemic change in Yong Yang’s name.

  • On Sunday, BLMLA joined tens of thousands of people, including 10 BLM Grassroots chapters across the country, for a National Day of Mourning for #SonyaMassey. Hundreds gathered in AfricaTown (Leimert Park) to pray, speak, light candles, and demand justice in Sonya’s honor. We came together in community not only to seek justice for her but also to demand an end to state-sponsored violence.
