BLMLA Actions/Events (7/15/2024-7/22/2024)
Wednesday, 7/17/2024 4PM - #EndPoliceAssociations Rally at 1313 W. 8th Street - It’s the 3rd Wednesday! That means drumming by Project Knucklehead! Meet us in these streets as we chant down the Los Angeles Police Protective League and all police associations. Police are not workers! They are tools of the oppressor, meant to threaten and exact violence on the workers of the world. No time is this more apparent than now as LAPD brutalizes and arrests those demanding a #FreePalestine and the end to Black death at the hands of police.
Thursday, 7/18/2024 2:30PM – Justice for #NianiFinlayson Press Conference at Law Office of Bradley Gage, 23002 Victory Blvd., Woodland Hills – Niani was a young Black mother who called 911 for help with a domestic dispute. Instead, Deputy Ty Shelton entered her apartment and killed her in a matter of seconds in front of her 9-year-old daughter. After 8 months of demand, Ty Shelton has been fired! Let’s stand with the family and continue to demand that he be prosecuted and that Niani’s family receive as much justice as they can.
Saturday, 7/21/2024 8-10AM This Is Not a Drill! on KBLA 1580 AM - This Is Not a Drill! on KBLA Talk 1580AM or facebook.com/BLMLA - Tune in to This Is Not a Drill! every Saturday 8-10AM.
Recap:
At the LAPC Commision last Tuesday, Black LIves Matter-LA, Stop LAPD Spying, White People 4 Black Lives, LA CAN and allies, called out the LA Police Commission for refusing to hold killer cops accountable after they steal our loved ones and take much needed resources away from our community.
At last Wednesday’s #EndPoliceAssociations rally, we were joined by the families of #SkyYoung, #JamesMincey, #VanessaMarquez, and #YongYang as well as Black Lives Matter Grassroots chapters from Florida, Mississippi, Detroit, Boise, and Lancaster Prison. Hamid Khan from Stop LAPD Spying and Britt from White People 4 Black Lives offered solidarity statements, beautiful music from the one and only Kayo, DJ Domina and Pastor Cue on the 1s and 2s…all in celebration of our 11 year anniversary.
On our radio program, This Is Not a Drill!, aired live on KBLA 1580 AM last Saturday, Baba Akili hosted with Victoria from BLM Detroit in the cohost chair. They were joined by our own Dr. Melina Abdullah and Brother Terry from BLM Boise to talk about 11 years of Black Lives Matter. The family of #AlvinCole served as our #MoreThanAHashtag conversation, talking about Alvin’s life and why they chartered a new Black Lives Matter Grassroots chapter in Milwaukee. Missed it? Watch here or listen to BLM’s This Is Not a Drill! wherever you get your podcasts.
All week long, Black Lives Matter Grassroots chapters from around the country convened in Los Angeles to celebrate 11 years of Black Lives Matter and the onboarding of six new chapters, bringing the total number of active, aligned, engaged Grassroots chapters to 39! We also sang a very happy birthday to “the baddest organizer on the planet,” our one and only Baba Akili.
