TUESDAY, 1/23/2024 at 6PM – Los Angeles Police Commission Meeting at Watts Labor Community Action Committee 10950 S. Central Ave – After years of pressure, not only are we saying goodbye to Chief Michel Moore (who was fired by the people), but for the first time in years, police commission is finally holding a meeting in community at night so it is more accessible. Let’s remind them that this should be the standard. This week is their first meeting of the year; let’s set the tone for the year and remind them we will hold the next police chief accountable too! LAPC Fails coalition talking points here.
TUESDAY, 1/23/2024 at 6:30PM – Torrance City Council Meeting for #ChristopherDeAndreMitchell IN PERSON at Torrance City Hall 3031 Torrance Blvd. – Let’s continue demanding the Council deliver justice in the name of #ChristopherDeAndreMitchell by establishing a civilian oversight commission of the Torrance Police Department.
WEDNESDAY, 1/24/24 at 4PM – #EndPoliceAssociations Rally at 1313 W. 8th St. – This week’s rally is meant to take down these fake “unions” that oppose working class people at every turn. The LA Police Protective League is organized crime. Bring your voices, your energy, and your commitment to building a just and free world. Streamed live on Instagram at @blmlosangeles.
SATURDAY, 8/26/2023 8-10AM – This Is Not a Drill! on KBLA Talk 1580AM or facebook.com/BLMLA – Topic and guests to come. Hosted by our very own Dr. Melina Abdullah. Taking your calls at 800-920-1580.
Recap:
January 18th marked the anniversary of the assassination of Tortuguita, a queer, Indigenous forest defender in the fight to Stop cop City, who was shot 57 times while seated in their tent with their hands up. May he rest in power! Viva Tortuguita! Stop Cop City!
Last Thursday morning in Los Angeles, Black Lives Matter-LA organizers and allies supported the family of #ChristopherDe’AndreMitchell to face killer cops, Anthony Chavez and Matthew Concannon as they stand trial for felony charges for Christopher’s murder. Christopher was shot and killed by #TorrancePD within 15 seconds of them approaching the vehicle in December 2018. Christopher’s family has been fighting for over five years, and Black Lives Matter has been with them every step of the way, and will continue to be.
On Friday January 12, killer cop and former sheriffs deputy Andrew Lyons, took a plea deal which convicted him of two felonies and made him the first cop in LA County in 22 years to receive for killing someone. In 2019, Lyons murdered beloved Black father of 3, #RyanTwyman.
Beginning this year, a new policy has been enacted at city council meetings, pushing the general public comment period from the beginning to the very end of the council meeting, which often lasts around 5-6 hours. The change was introduced by council president Paul Krekorian at the Tuesday December 5th meeting in what he describes as an attempt to prioritize public comment for agenda items but what many community organizers feel is to stifle general public comment. So we need your voice more than ever! Come out to the city council meetings every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 9am at city hall and uplift your voice during public comment! Demand that the council revert the rules to take ALL public comment at the beginning of the meeting!
At last Wednesday’s #EndPoliceAssociations rally, Week 131, we drummed out the revolution with Project Knucklehead and made signs in solidarity with the #StopCopCity movement. We were joined by the families of #JuanCorrea, #VanessaMarquez, #KendrecMcDade, #JamesMincey, and #SkyYoung, as well as our recently released member of BLM Prison Chapter, Brother Kareem.
Last Saturday’s This Is Not A Drill featured a conversation on No More Moore with Black Lives Matter-LA’s very own Baba Akili in conversation with BLMLA core organizer and team lead of the police accountability team, Mama Paula Minor, and James Thomas from the Clergy for Black Lives and Kim Holmes in the co-host chair. For our #MoreThanAHashtag conversation we spoke with the mother of #DexterWade who was killed in Jackson, Mississippi when an officer ran him over, and he was buried in a pauper’s field without any notification to the family. Missed it? Watch here.
