Closed to cops, media, elected officials, their staff, and haters.

  • MONDAY, 10/09/2023 5-7PM (encore 7-9PM) – “The Tape One Year Later,” a discussion on anti-Blackness in Los Angeles on KBLA Talk 1580 – Tune in to what is sure to be a powerful discussion about Black power, anti-Blackness and prospects for Black-Brown solidarity one year after four Latinx leaders were caught on tape engaging in anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, anti-poor rhetoric and actions. Our own Dr. Melina Abdullah is a part of the roundtable moderated by Tavis Smiley.

Recap:

  1. Last Tuesday, the Los Angeles Police Commission adopted two key community demands after years of community pressure and advocacy. Now everyone who submits a speaker card will have the chance to speak, regardless of the former 45-minute public comment limit, and beginning in January 2024, the police commission will meet in the community once a quarter. This comes after a letter was submitted by the LAPC Fails Coalition last month making these demands.  Join every Tuesday morning at 9:30am at LAPD headquarters to help hold the commission accountable.

  2. At last Wednesday’s #EndPoliceAssociations rally, Week 138, Dr. Melina Abdullah reminded us that we are good at getting corrupt officials out of office. We have not forgotten about the leaked audio tapes last year that exposed Kevin de León’s racist grab for power. His bid for re-election is an insult to Black Angelenos and we WILL vote him out. The family of #JamesMincey was present, calling for the community to support the families impacted by police violence by staying in these streets. Kayo sang a heartwarming cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come,” Joseph Williams gave our call to actions with flair and our @blmyouthvanguard closed us with an inspiring Assata.

  3. Last Thursday, the Los Angeles Sentinel published Dr. Melina Abdullah’s column “The Attempted Murder of Black Lives Matter,” where she exposed the Global Network Foundation and talked about the importance of Black Lives Matter Grassroots. Folks can read the article at lasentinel.net. It’s also on @blmgrassroots social media: IG, Twitter and Facebook

  4. Last Saturday’s This Is Not A Drill featured a very necessary conversation on “What Real Black and Brown Solidarity Looks Like” with Mau Trejo of Students Deserve and Leda Ramos, Professor of Chicanx and Latinx Studies at Cal State-LA. On our #MoreThanAHashtag segment, we spoke with the mother of 15-year old #JaheimMcMillan who was killed by Gulport police in front of Family Dollar and whose first angelversary was honored with a protest and rally that BLM Grassroots supported this past Friday. Our very own Dr. Melina Abdullah hosted, with Joseph Williams in the co-host chair. Missed it? Watch here.
