Recap:
Last Tuesday, after nearly 10 months of community pressure, the LA Police Commission issued a rare out-of-policy ruling for the killing of #KeenanAnderson. The ruling was announced after Black Lives Matter - Los Angeles, White People for Black Lives, Stop LAPD Spying Coalition and People's City Council stood with the family of #KeenanAnderson at LAPD Headquarters, held a press conference and packed the Police Commission Meeting to remind the Commission that the world was watching. As this ruling is yet another victory, we continue to seek justice in his name with his family and call for an end to police response to traffic stops and mental health crises. And with the presence of Ms. Italy and Sister Sharon, the family of Earl Callier who was shot by LAPD on 10/14 in Skid Row during a mental health crisis, at the commission meeting, we know that the fight is far from over.
At last Wednesday’s #EndPoliceAssociations rally, Week 141, we continued our call for a “Ceasefire Here and There”, connecting our continued call for the removal of police associations from the County Federation of Labor, the firing of LAPD Chief Michel Moore and the resignation of racist, disgraced city councilmember Kevin de Leon to the fight to end the U.S. funding of Isreali genocide against the Palestinian people. The families of #VanessaMarquez, #GrecharioMack, #JohnHorton and #JohnathanHart were present as Baba Hank Jones, former political prisoner and Black Panther, warned that the atrocities the people of Palestine are experiencing today will be the same ones that Black people will experience here in the future if we do not “wake up” and stand in solidarity with all oppressed people globally.
Last Saturday’s “This Is Not A Drill” featured a victorious reflection on “A Win in the Name of #KeenanAnderson'' with Patrisse Cullors, cousin of Keenan Anderson and attorney Cynthia McClain-Hill. Our #MoreThanAHashtag conversation was with the mother of Earl Callier, who was shot by LAPD on 10/14 during a mental health crisis and is fighting for his life while in custody. Dr. Melina Abdullah hosted, with Kim Holmes in the co-host chair. Missed it? Watch here.
Also last Saturday, Black Lives Matter - Los Angeles packed the stands to cheer on and support the talented United LA, the only all-Black girls club soccer team in Los Angeles…and it’s believed the entire country. After being ridiculed, called the “n-word” and attacked by white and other non-Black players, when their Black parents tried to intervene, they were banned from the arena. In the face of injustice on the field, our girls showed us how powerful they are by playing a great game, scoring three goals and winning! We cannot allow this kind of racist harassment to go unanswered. We will show up for our girls every time. And more…we will work with Black parents to expose and challenge the racism of the league.
