This Week’s BLMLA Actions/Events (1/10/2022-1/17-2022):
MONDAY, 1/10/2022 at 4:30PM – Demand Justice for #AnthonyMcClain at the Pasadena City Council Meeting on Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/161482446 – it’s the first Pasadena City Council meeting of the year! Place TWO speaker cards with these points: 1) Items not on the agenda: We demand the firing of officer Edwin Dumaguindin, who shot #AnthonyMcClain twice in the back, the firing of Ronald Soreno, who knelt on him, and every officer involved in the cover up. 2) Item #1: In a city that is committed to shirking accountability for the brutalization of Black people, we object to an additional $800k for armored police vehicles. We demand police accountability and the firing of the officers who murdered Anthony McClain. Please submit speaker cards prior to the public comment period at the link here. To participate by phone, call 1-669-900-6833, Meeting ID: 161 482 446. Learn more and find talking points here.
TUESDAY, 1/11/2022 at 9:30AM – Los Angeles Police Commission Meeting on Zoom at https://lapd.zoom.us/s/289225944 – LAPD killed 18 people in 2021, with 5 killings in the last 2 weeks of the year. One of the victims over the holiday season was 14-year-old #ValentinaOrellanaPeralta, who was killed on December 23rd at the Burlington Coat Factory. Even though the rise in LAPD shootings came under global scrutiny, LAPD is planning to move $41 million outside of budget in grants, donations and contracts, in addition to requesting a $218 million budget increase for the next fiscal year. LAPD should NOT be rewarded for their fatal failures with MORE funding. It’s important that on the first police commission meeting of the year we make our outrage heard loud and clear. Coalition talking points here. Please use the “raise hand” function to speak. To participate by phone, call (855) 880-1246, Meeting ID: 289 225 944. Press *9 to be put in the cue for public comment.
TUESDAY, 1/11/2021 at 6:30PM – Torrance City Council Meeting for #ChristopherDeAndreMitchell at TorranceCA.gov and facebook.com/TorranceCA/ – Torrance PD ended last year embroiled in a racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic scandal that unveiled the department’s (and city’s) true colors. Because of the scandal, hundreds of cases are being reviewed and the time for justice is riper than ever. We need you to make public comment uplifting our demands in the name of #ChristopherDeAndreMitchell: 1) Fire Torrance police officers Anthony Chavez, Brian Kawamoto and Matthew Concannon for the murder of #ChristopherDeAndreMitchell, and 2) Establish a civilian oversight commission over Torrance PD. To make a public comment during the meeting, call 310-618-2404 or you can email your comment in by 3pm to CouncilMeetingPublicComment@TorranceCA.gov.
