Weekly Email 3/15-3/22/2021

This Week’s BLMLA Actions/Events (3/15-3/22/2021):

  • Monday, 3/29/2021 5PM & 7:15PM – A Day of Remembrance & Community Action at Kenneth Hahn Hall 500 W Temple St &  Men’s Central Jail 441 Bauchet St – March 29th marks the one year deadline for the MCJ Closure Report. Join BLMLA, JusticeLA, and Reimagine LA in front of Kenneth Hahn Hall for a press conference, and then march with us to Men’s Central Jail for a rally and vigil that will give special honor to #JohnHorton, who was beaten to death inside Men’s Central on March 30, 2009. We demand that the BOS follow through on their promises to close Men’s Central Jail and bring our people home to their families. We also demand that the BOS stay true to their word on funding services instead of incarceration by funding the #MeasureJ recommendations approved and developed by the community.

  • Tuesday, 3/30/2021 10:30AM – The People Speak at LAPD HQ 100 West 1st St – LAPD shot 8 people, and killed 3, in the past 2 weeks. They unleashed militarized violence in Echo Park and joked about setting protestors on fire. Yet, the cowardly Police Commission canceled their weekly meeting, so the #LAPCFails coalition is bringing the meeting to them! Join us outside of LAPD headquarters and give public comment. Coalition talking points here.

  • WEDNESDAY, 3/31/21 AT 3PM (and every Wednesday) – Fund Services, Not Police! #EndPoliceAssociations at 1313 W. 8th St., Los Angeles – We’re taking down the police associations that function as organized crime, enabling killer cops, bullying and bribing elected officials, and criminalizing our people. Gather in front of the ACLU building…directly across the street from the headquarters of the Los Angeles Police Protective League. Bring your bodies, spirits, energy, drums, signs, flags and dedication. This week we’ll give special honor to #WakieshaWilson, who was murdered March 27, 2015 inside LA Metro Detention Center. Special musical offering by our own Selina Carrera!

  • Thursday, 4/1/2021 7PM – This Is Not a Drill! “What is Community Organizing?” facebook.com/blmla – Let’s talk about what community organizing really means, with Jorden Giger of BLM-South Bend, our beloved Baba Akili, and more to be announced. Hosted by our own Melina Abdullah.
