Jackson wrote the seminal book Soledad Brother: The Prison Letters of George Jackson, a combination of autobiography and manifesto addressed to a black American audience.

Jackson became political while serving time in San Quentin for armed robbery, becoming completely focused on the betterment of Black people,. co founding the Maoist-Marxist Black Guerrilla Family.
