Billions Of Dollars For New Jails? Nah.

The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors has approved a multi-billion dollar contract to build a new jail, replacing the “dungeon-like” Men’s Central Jail downtown. The ACLU and Justice LA are organizing to put a stop to it, including a rally and press conference on Tuesday, August 13th at 9:30 AM, 500 West Temple Street in Los Angeles (the so-called “Hall of Justice”).

The ACLU petition (which you should totally sign) is aimed at Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, and posits that building a new building won’t help “an incarceration system that is not only woefully outdated, but also severely unfair to people of color, people living in poverty and women.”

Black Lives Matter Los Angeles stands with Jusice LA and the ACLU in opposing the creation of a new “dungeon” for its citizens, and we hope to see you Tuesday morning!
